America Is Plunging Into Kafka’s Nightmare

January 14, 2014 by Brandon Smith

The Eye

There is a certain level of dishonesty in the common study of history. We look back at the tyrannies of the past, the monstrous governments, the devastating wars and the unimaginable crimes, and we wonder how it could have been possible. How could the people of that particular generation let such atrocities come to pass? Why didn’t they do something? Why didn’t they protest? Why didn’t they fight back?

We wonder all of this as we absorb the lists of dates, names and actions in books written by other men who memorized other lists of dates, names and actions. We are taught to study and wonder without ever actually applying the lessons of the past to the developments of today. We are conditioned to apply our own narrow spin on yesterday, instead of placing ourselves in the shoes of our ancestors or recognizing that their struggles remain our struggles. The modern method of viewing history detaches us from history, making it seem distant, alien or surreal.

Often, the only way to grasp the more complete truth of the present is to examine it through the lens of the absurd. Sadly, our Nation, our culture and most of the world around us have become so backward, ugly, feeble and twisted that the only adequate comparison is to the nightmares of surrealists.

Recent legislation, the exposure of classified documents and the openly admitted criminality of political leadership call to mind Franz Kafka’s The Trial.

Kafka was a self-styled socialist back in the days when socialism was thought to be the next revolutionary movement for the downtrodden masses. It was, of course, controlled opposition created by global elitists attempting to exploit the natural rebellious tendencies of the general public within a false paradigm — using the masses to achieve greater power for a select few, while making the people think that they had won. It is ironic that Kafka would write The Trial, one of the greatest condemnations of totalitarian surveillance society, while at the same time supporting the socialist political vehicle that would eventually be used to implement unrelenting bureaucratic despotism.

The Trial is commonly labeled a “surrealist” piece of fiction, but I wonder now if it was actually far more literal than the academics of the past actually gave it credit for. The problem is that most of America, and much of the Western world, has forgotten what it is like to experience true danger and true suffering. We read about it now and watch movies about it like it’s entertainment, but few people have the slightest inkling how to deal with the real thing. We don’t even know how to recognize it. Because of this, Americans tend to pay more attention to fictional representations of tyranny rather than legitimate tyranny taking place right under their noses.

With that sad fact in mind, watch this clip from Orson Welles’ cinematic version of The Trial. See if you recognize your own world in this work of fantasy:

The main character of The Trial, Josef K., finds his apartment invaded by police in the early hours of the morning. Josef responds with anger but also fear, attempting to defend his character without actually understanding the nature of the police visit. The police answer his questions with more accusatory questions, only later warning him that he is being watched and that he is under arrest. The police do not, however, take him immediately into custody; nor do they ever tell him what his crime was. It is implied, in fact, that Josef is not allowed to know what he is being charged with.

This episode in The Trial has been played out in the real world over and over again, from the Soviet Cheka, to Adolf Hitler’s SS and Brownshirts, to Benito Mussolini’s Organization for Vigilance and Repression of Anti-Fascism (OVRA), to the German Stasi, to Mao Zedong’s Central Security Bureau, etc. In the United States, the culture of surveillance and intrusion has (for now) taken a more subtle approach through the use of technology. We do not yet have agents physically rummaging through all our homes and asking for our papers (though we are not far away from this). Rather, we have the National Security Agency, which rummages through our electronic communications while using our own computer cameras and cellphones to watch us, listen to us and track us. All of this, mind you, is done on a massive scale without warrant.

We have the Authorization for Use of Military Force and the National Defense Authorization Act , which gives the President the centralized authority to detain and even kill those Americans designated as “enemy combatants” without trial, without due process and without public oversight.

Our government now uses secret evidence to charge citizens with crimes they are not allowed to discuss with the public on the argument that to do so would “threaten national security. That’s right; the government can arrest you or assassinate you based on evidence they never have to disclose to you, your family, your lawyer or the citizenry.

In the U.S. today, the kind of establishment terror Kafka imagined is indeed a reality. We are not on the verge of a total surveillance state, we are there. It exists. And if we do not accept that this is our social condition, there may be no historians tomorrow to look back on our era and wonder: “Why didn’t they do something? Why didn’t they fight back?”

The revelations brought by Edward Snowden on the NSA and its PRISM mass surveillance program are still only partially understood by the public. Even many self-proclaimed “cypherpunks” and “techno-warriors” don’t really grasp the pervasiveness of the all-seeing NSA eye. Recent documents leaked to German news source Der Spiegel by Snowden reveal an Internet almost completely dominated by the NSA, where even total encryption would be a mere temporary stopgap, according to tech researcher and journalist Jacob Appelbaum. The TOA group, sanctioned by the NSA, has been using technologies for years that startle even the most avid tech experts. To make matters worse, many of the intrusive mechanisms have been implemented — likely with the direct aid of American software and computer companies.

With NSA access to the backbone or core of the Internet, there is no digital privacy anywhere. The cypherpunks lost the war for the Web a long time ago, and they don’t seem to know it yet.

Beyond the undeniable prevalence of government surveillance, what would our American Kafkaesque experience be like without kangaroo courts designed to defend the criminal establishment instead of the victimized population? The latest Federal court decision on the NSA’s methods is that they are perfectly legal and “necessary” to protect Americans from national security threats. If you are a student of Constitutional law, this decision truly boggles the mind.

One of the most powerful moments in The Trial is Josef’s speech to his court of accusers. In this moment, Josef argues with concrete logic and impassioned reason. His position is supported with beautifully crafted merit and truth. But what he does not realize is that the court he is trying to convince does not exist to discover the truth. The court is a sideshow, a piece of elaborate theater. The participants are there to make Josef, and the society at large, feel as though justice has been given a fair chance. Josef’s pleas are met with fake cheers, scripted jeers and even engineered distractions. Finally, he comes to understand that the system’s purpose is to destroy him. Everything else is an illusion.

The Web cannot be made free or private from within; our courts cannot be made fair and just from within; neither political party can be forced to represent the common man from within; and our government cannot be made honest or transparent from within. To play games of activism within the system is to play make-believe within a surrealist nightmare — a piece of “Alice in Wonderland” political quackery. Like the audience at Josef’s trial, the elites simply laugh, or feign applause, while continuing forever with the same corruption and the criminal status quo.

America has long presented itself as the ultimate alternative to the torturous mechanisms of oligarchs; and a long time ago, it was certainly a noble effort. However, our heritage of liberty — the faint memory of it — is all that’s left today. Some people may ask how this could have occurred. How did we become the monster we were supposed to fight against? What happened to the good side and the bad side? Have they become exactly the same?

Those of us who have looked beyond the standardized veil of history know that this is not by accident. Those of us who decipher the surreal know that there is a method to the madness and an ultimate goal. To explain further, I leave you with another piece of fiction, a clip from an episode of the British TV series “The Prisoner.” While not written by Kafka, it was definitely inspired by him. It carries a message I would have liked to have warned him about concerning the disturbing path of duality, the mask with multiple faces that tyranny uses to subvert and enslave:

America is slowly coming to life and the awareness of the nation is being noticed by these traitors that want to enslave us.I see articles about foreign troops being used to subdue us.
This is a BIG country and it’s very doubtful if they would get very far before they became targets of opportunity in a heavily armed country.Stay alert but try to carefully analyze these claims from groups heretofore unheard of in the public domain.Challenge them to prove these claims and find out if they are real or if it’s someone trying to create anxiety or worse yet, provoke the unstable among to do something REALLY stupid.
Start raising Hell with your Congressperson and remind them in language they will understand that they represent US or WE THE PEOPLE will replace them.As it stands now, these are opportunists that represent the party they belong to and must be reminded of the consequences of this disregard for the constituency that elected them.
Remember, the price of liberty is still eternal vigilance and setting around watching TV and worrying about a ball team is NOT the way to do that.

      Bob,

I truly hope that many more Americans are becoming aware of what is actually going on in this country. I’ve seen articles too about foreign troops in here. If the King unleashes his might, he’ll use military equipment to take us all down. Guns won’t be any defense of that.
But, I am hoping he doesn’t go that far, but I don’t put it past him either.

My Congressman is a tea party guy so he is already doing what he can. The establishment repukes are trying to defeat every tea party rep out there.

One thing that may become positive is the SCOTUS heard the case yesterday about the King making recess appointments when the senate was just making a show of being there. The SCOTUS, even some of the liberal leaning ones, didn’t seem to say anything to uphold what he did. It’s possible they may rule against him for doing something Unconstitutional. if they do it might set him back a bit on abusing his power. Who knows?

      • And what those fellows in the NSA that keep spying on us (I’m looking at you) and our Internet traffic don’t realize, that if they should keep going on with this, and we turn into a tyrannic state-run, police state, surveillance country, everyone loses. And everyone loses badly.

When this happens, how will they (the people of the NSA) be able to stop accusations from the militarized police that they are “aiding and abetting” “terrorists” by not spying on the populace enough? Do they think they’ll get a good trial that seeks justice and truth? Do they think that even after they’re already convicted of their said “crimes” and sent to prison, they’ll still see the light of day again? Are they so compliant with their government just to get a few extra bucks? If this happens, everyone loses. The police, the government officials, and the surveillance guys will not escape the horrors that they created that surrounds them. We have crossed the border of left wing and right wing, we are now in the domain of right and wrong.

In all state-run, surveillance governments in history, such as the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Vietnam, and China, everyone lost. Remember the Great Purge of the 30’s when Stalin simply got “rid” of his security, surveillance, and police forces (NKVD), and his military (Red Army) by either a bullet to the head or sending them to suffer in gulags in Siberia? And Stalin claimed that they were all conspiring against him, and thus needed to die. Remember when the Stasi (East German security, surveillance, and police) would round up hundreds of accused “traitors” and send them to their deaths? Nothing will save the people that work for the NSA from an accusation from a person of higher power than them. They need to realize that they are only furthering evil, and this will help no one.

          Fellow Patrriot,

Great comment. Yes, I recall Stalin, Hitler, and the others of their great purges. I don’t think a lot of people are familiar with this kind of history any longer. Certainly not the youth of today who are being taught other things, but not history, not the truth.

No one will escape the purges, not the NSA or anyone else involved in this evil. I don’t think they even see things as evil. That’s the trouble with the NSA and the liberals. They think they will be immune from Obama’s purges. What a shock they have coming to them when they finally discover that Obama cares nothing for them. They serve only as useful idiots and once they no longer serve his purpose, they too will be at the mercy of his actions, whatever they may be.

It’s just like when they discovered their taxes all went up last January. The liberals were mad as hell, thinking only the rich would be taxed. To their chagrin those “middle class” liberals found they were not left out from his tax raises. I recall reading the dismay on Huffington Post from these people. But, do they turn against him. No. They just keep living in their fantasy world.

None of these people seem to grasp that he hates Americans one and all.

          • At least schools back then taught about the horrors of a statist totalitarian state. But now the closest thing they teach about is the similarities between Bush and Hitler, when they don’t even bother to teach about the risings of Hitler and similarities to Obama. Our own ignorance will be our undoing.

And another thing I might add, if I may, is about the Bolsheviks and the Mencheviks in Russia. Now just to get past the differences between them, the Bolsheviks (meaning “big” or “majority”) advocated violence to overthrow the Tsarist regime in Russia. The Mencheviks (meaning “small” or “minority”) advocated using peaceful measures to gain control.

Now to get to the point, obviously the Bolsheviks won the Russian Civil War, but right after the war, Lenin began the process of eliminating possible opposition to his regime, which meant arresting and eliminating fellow party members and the Mencheviks. It was Lenin who set up the gulags, and the ground works for the NKVD. Soon after that, Lenin suffers a stroke and dies, and Stalin begins to rise through the party ranks by doubletalking, backstabbing, and murder. After Stalin seized the “throne”, Stalin began his own little purge, and he ran his biggest opponent, Leon Trotsky, out of the USSR.

Didn’t mean to go history on you, but this should be the textbook that we should be learning from. And guess what? Lenin preached to the Russian people that he would bring “change”, “equality”, and “fairness” to the sick country. Not that I can blame the Russian people for believing him and his goons, after all, full blown Marxism was a relatively “new” thing, no one could have predicted it would be the staple of one of the most repressive, totaliatarian, and bloody, regimes in the history of the world.

            Fellow Patriot,

Yes, the public schools are teaching skewed history if they teach it at all.
When I was in school, we started history in the first grade. My grand children were in a public school and by the time my grand daughter was in 4th grade, still no history was being taught. I was astounded.

My daughter in law moved them out to a private school where they now get history lessons. If my son were alive he’d be livid over these public schools and my daughter in law and her husband now plan to never put the kids into another public school because of the indoctrination those kids were getting from kindergarten, mostly about global warming of all things.

So I agree with you, the youth, who are supposed to be the future of our country won’t know a thing about history and be able to see what is going on under their noses.

Don’t apologize for the history. These are the things that should be taught in our schools just like you and I were taught. I’m afraid that is a by gone thing now. Kids will never be taught these types of things you wrote. To me it’s a downright crime.

  3. Thank you pepper for the article which is outstanding and a good refresher course. A lot of folks squawk about ovomit, but like this article says, they don’t truly grasp what this puke is really up to. If buy some chance if this year’s election favors the GOP and they win both houses, that doesn’t stop this fake with his edicts going around Congress. Unless he is impeached, I feel he will crate some fictional up rising and declare marshal law and this country will never see another presidential election. Some conspiracy theorists are claiming Ovomit’s plan has been in the making even before he was elected in 2008. It is difficult for me to put my arms around such an idea, but with the enormity of what is going on today, it boggles my mind to think how he can be that much of a deviate against our country.

I’m reading a book called the Manchurian Candidate and his presidency was planned a long time ago. The book is fully documented. I think the globalists made sure it would be a black man knowing that if he’s criticized the race card would come out and to this day we’re being bludgeoned with that no matter what he does.

It still boggles my mind too how many people voted for this guy with no research done on this past which told the whole story of just where this man would head us. If people don’t do their own research on a candidate shame on them. You can’t just listen to flowery words and trust someone.

But I wonder who is (will be) rooting for us? “Why did it take them that long to see it and do it?” People want to be proud and the signs we see around us aren’t good.

We have the duopoly of politics acting as one with the illusion they really care about anyone. Then the all-powerful state functioning on its own. Each part has its own perks and benefits, and role to play. Each has their illusion of importance. As long as those in power get theirs, what’s the problem? (the i got mine principle) But there is actually only one power sitting at the top.

He loves the Muslims and will do anything he can to help them at our expense. Everything is upside down and it’s meant to be that way. The puppet masters are making sure that those of us, who are true Americans fall the hardest. And I would not doubt that another terrorist attack is coming because of the ridiculous PC rules that have been forced on us.

Did you see the King talking about the NSA? He plans to do nothing about it. I hope Rand Paul’s attempt to take this before the Supremes has some kind of good outcome.

This dangerous situation in our country is now promoted by the young people and the welfare statists that think they have a right to our hard earned lifestyles and I enjoy unraveling their boneheaded arguments whenever I can. They want all their parents and grandparents worked for years to achieve and want it the minute they get out of school.
As Paul Harvey used to say,”I have NEWS for you”youngsters, and that is not going to happen.

Bob, you must have been in school a different time than I was because Stalin and his forebears were taught in my school and communism was considered one of the most awful things that could happen to anyone. But, I know that history is being changed to meet the liberal propaganda now. No truth is being taught at all, if they teach history at all.

Yeah, I don’t know where the kids get the idea that they don’t’ have to ” work” for their places in the work place. That’s certainly not what I was taught. Hard work and putting in 110% was how I was taught. You get nothing unless you are willing to work hard. I guess with the welfare state, these kids think they should get everything right away. How ridiculous is that? That’s if they work at all since so many just go onto the welfare roles and get more money and benefits than if they were working a job.

Enough is enough is exactly on the money. I doubt if any of these congress critters give one hoot what we say as long as they are getting theirs and they become millionaires over night. We’re left out in the cold and the swamp definitely needs to be drained of these parasites who live off our tax dollars. As far as I’m concerned these pols are the biggest recipients of welfare as they do nothing to earn their money which comes out of our pocket. They have no real jobs, just our tax dollars. I’m plain sick of it myself. I’d throw almost all of them out on their butts and they can try to get a real job if they can. Most of them are not capable of that. They no nothing. They are just con men.

I started school in the early 1940’s in Palatine,Illinois and after Pearl Harbor we moved into Chicago because my father decided to bail out on my mother and I. She had a job with the phone company and I was in school and being looked after by an aunt whose husband had served in the German Army in WW1.It was a German neighborhood and I picked up a good bit of the language there.Uncle Karl told us all that Hitler was bad news and the Russians were even worse and he was right. He left Germany in 1919 or 20 because of the turmoil after the end of the war.He kept track of it thru friends and relatives who stayed there.
I have read just about everything Alexander Solzynitsin has written that has been translated into English and these books should be required reading along with William Shirer’s “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”and a test give and passed before anyone could get a degree in anything. It is appalling to see the rise of stupidity and a system of education reduced to boneheaded indoctrination and not one voice heard in protest. Hoots, giggles, whistles, feathers and toys are not a substitute for basic knowledge but the ball games and tailgateing seem to be the order of the day now,at least here they are.

I’ve also read tons of books about Russia. I agree that these books should be mandatory in our schools today. Nobody can understand fascism or communism if they don’t read these kinds of history books.

It is appalling the way our public schools are operating and the kids are coming out dumber and dumber.

My daughter in law took my grand children out of public school this year and put them into a private school. They are now learning very well and doing so much better. Her husband says no public school ever again because of the liberal indoctrination these public schools are teaching instead of real teaching.
